Hand-Making 18th and 19th Century House Paints

In this two day, hands-on workshop, participants will make multiple types of housepaint (oil-based, limewash, and distemper), using traditional materials and methods. Paints will be ground on a muller and slab, as well as in a paint mill. Materials will include: linseed oil, animal glue, dry pigments, and chalk. Students will also learn about historic brushes and brushing techniques.

All workshops begin at 9:30am on the first day of the program.

All participants must be 18+ years old.

Instructors

Erika Sanchez

Erika Sanchez studied Preservation Carpentry at the North Bennet Street School, then worked for Williamstown Art Conservation Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For the last 15 years, she has specialized in the replication and application of hand-ground architectural paints, working with Chris Mills in some of the most prestigious museums and historic sites around the country.

Christopher Mills

Christopher Mills is principal of Christopher Mills Conservation Services, specializing in architectural conservation, recovery, and reinstallation of 18th and 19th Century interior finishes using traditional methods. His projects with Erika Sanchez include Montpelier, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Stratford Hall, and multiple rooms in the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
