A Handy Shopper: Willow Basketry

Weave a lovely willow basket for the garden, the Farmer’s Market, for odds and ends and oh so many uses. You will learn the basic and important techniques of Stake and Strand basketry. The finished product will be approximately 11” in diameter and 8” high. You will also learn the pleasures and challenges of growing willow, how it is harvested or foraged, and how it is prepared as a weaving material. 

This class is designed for beginner and intermediate weavers. All materials and tools will be provided.

All workshops begin at 9:30am on the first day of the program.

All participants must be 18+ years old.

Instructors

Heleny Cook

Heleny Cook has her studio in Williamstown, MA where she grows her own willow and forages for wild willow in the wet fields and roadside ditches. She has studied with weavers in Ireland, England, Canada, and the US and enjoys sharing the craft and lore with others. She has taught at Hancock Shaker Village and Bon Dimanche Studio in Great Barrington.

“My work with willow began in Williamstown, Massachusetts, in the Berkshire mountains where I established my studio and started growing my own cultivated willow while foraging for wild willow in wet fields and along roadside ditches. Learning how willow grows—where it thrives, when it’s ready to harvest, and how it behaves in the hand—became as important to me as the weaving itself. The process is both deeply satisfying and continually challenging, shaped by season, landscape, and patience.
